Saturday: Ballz drinks Against the Grain in shitty Tinley.
Sunday: maurice drinks Against the Grain at Against the Grain.

Surprised to see Darkness on there. This is pretty carefully selected lineup. Unusual for a beer fest.

The whole fest is special releases or brewery-only options. This probably trumps the amazing tap list from last year. I need to enjoy it now before word gets out to Chicago fuckfaces that "shitty Tinley" is home to one of the top beer events in the damn land.

The problem isn't going or getting out to "shitty Tinley" but I don't want to deal with drunk driving haps on the way. Of course it is early enough that I could just chill out for a couple hours afterwards and just sober up

I wouldn't go that far. For example, you can get BORIS (barrel-aged or not) in bottles year-round.

Others are only "special" in the sense that they're seasonal. Plead the 5th is pretty widely available when it's released in stout season. Devil Dancer is EVERYWHERE right now, because they're charging $22 for a 4-pack.

Not sure how widely available BA Plead the 5th is at any time, but regardless... The fest is supposed to be "at least 2 rare, pub only or otherwise unique brews."

Naturally, a couple of these jokers take their liberties with the "otherwise unique" option, but it's obviously only a handful... and they're still bringing quality offerings, so .

AtG just closed on a brewery/bottling plant, so you'll be seeing more of it in Chicago.

Up 'til now, they've been operating out of a brewpub in a minor-league ballpark.

Fest ruled... Got wasted. Through my own pours and tastes of what other people had, I pretty much tried every non-sour, fruit, etc. ale available.

Firestone's Helldorado and Against the Grain's London Balling (even though not at the actual brewery) were both awesome.

Rev's Tribal Hero was awesome. I continued drinking that on tap when the fest was over.

So many people ended up puking, it was gross.

Definitely worth the price, but I don't want to pre-game the UFC at the UC by drinking high gravity beer in the suburbs at 10:30am.

    Or do I?

In the past two years, I've never run out of tix. But as discussed in the other thread, some of the vendors are just jags and sticklers and will insist on tix, while most others couldn't give a fuck. Pretty sure they're "strongly encouraged" to collect them. But I'm not above asking the vendor if he's fucking shitting me when they ask for tix, so I usually get a couple that way.

Beer pourers at these things mostly are volunteers not related to the beer they're pouring. Even if they're wearing the brewer's tshirt. Dark Horse and AtG, for example, are very unlikely to send reps to Tinley Park.

The rest are brewers and such, but neither group should give a fuck about tickets.
  40. CaptainBallz
    Offline

    CaptainBallz Windowlickin' Good

Yeah, guaranteed the biggest sticklers are the volunteers/ "friend of the rep" who is happy to be there for the free beer for himself, but doesn't feel comfortable giving the beer away to people who paid to be there.

    HEY BALLz,

Thoughts on Hailstorm and 350 - I mean the actual places? Also, have you been to that place across the street from 350? That sells and does tastings?
  50. CaptainBallz
    Offline

    CaptainBallz Windowlickin' Good

Hailstorm is in an industrial area and has a taproom area up front that opens up into their brewing facility. During the week/Sundays, you're just hanging in the taproom, but on weekends or for other events, they'll set up tables in the warehouse area. They'll bring in bands to play the warehouse (more commercial/classic rock fare) and have quite a kickass Open Mic going on Thursdays. Otherwise, it's usually streaming classic rock/ awesome 90's. the They'll also have food trucks or this wood-fire pizza place come in on the weekends. There are no TVs, which is awesome, but they'll throw Bears/Hawks haps on the projector if necessary. The vibe is less bar-like and more awesome garage party. Some friendly-ass people around there.

350 is much smaller, much more "decorated" on the interior, and has more of a bar atmosphere. Small menu of decent, reasonably priced eats that they make there and an ever-rotating taplist, given they mainly do small batches. They bring the punk rock and are also very nice guys. I prefer Hailstorm because there's something about that place that facilitates more convo with strangers, but hit 350 up about as often these days. There have been numerous nights where we close Hailstorm and then us and the entire Hailstorm staff migrate to 350 to close them out.

The other place across the street is Open Bottle. It's run by a super nice couple in their 20's and is the more "sophisticated" of the bunch, mainly because it's more beer store than bar. But you can crack open anything you take off the shelves along with about 5 rotating beers on tap. They'll also have food trucks and other events, including some amazing tap takeovers. Definitely worth popping in and staying for a couple.
