Paul Sullivan was on M&H yesturday and said the Cubs' payroll was leveraged, and no wiggle room.

I think Hoyer and co. are playing the "see! we tried!" card more than the Sox.

Yeah, I don't buy that. They sound like a heavy favorite at this point.

Yeah the Cubs have money to spend. And this makes a lot of sense of them to do.

Of course like the Lions whiffing on Whisenhunt and settling on Caldwell I could see the all this Tanaka talk turning into the Cubs missing out and getting Ubaldo Jimenez for 4 years $50 million. Would be such a "Cub like" turn of events.

I was always under the impression that Ricketts was up to his eyes in debt, and allocating all of the revenue to pay off the debt, and renovate Wrigley.

    Hence why the rebuild.

B&B are playing the breaking news big voice guy saying each team in town has signed Tanaka. What jagoffs.

Mike from Milwaukee is pretty funny when he's actually making sense. I mean I know being drunk is his shtick but when he's legitimately incoherent that's not fun.

What is there to explain? The Cubs as they have for a while, have money to spent. And they have TV and radio rights expiring soon which will generate even more money.

901 isn't wrong, per se. This lengthy article describes the weird sale process that Zell insisted on, which resulted in a lot of Kubbie debt.

I'm not sure if a renovation deal has been *OFFICIALLY* signed, but it's definitely close. And IIRC the Cubs have or are close to doing a new TV deal...I remember talking about this a few months ago but can't find my post.

It's most likely an artificial limit on the payroll, as they could probably have a high payroll if they really wanted to. They probably want to aggressively lower the debt when they know the team won't be competitive and that signing a couple high priced free agents over the past couple years would've been pointless so instead they are not spending that money on players and using that instead to pay off the debt.

If there were a player or two away from being a contender, I think they would be spending the money.

:helloexactly: they arent spending money because there is no need to

There definitely seems to be a focus by the Rickett$ on maximizing revenues from everything, hence the Viagra Triangle II: Electric Boogaloo they're trying to build between Sheffield/Waveland/Clark/Addison on game days, pushing for as many big concerts as the neighborhood will allow, shitty kid-oriented mascots like Clark, etc., so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't pull the trigger on deals like Tanaka while they are still 2+ years away from competing.

But assuming they're not stupid, they also know that a postseason appearance and especially a World Series title would cement the sCrUBS as a perennial golden goose, so it's a delicate balance between making money while being shitty/mediocre and winning/making even more money.

I know falls under "shit you hear on The Score", but supposedly Theo and Hoyer were a little taken aback by how much money the Ricketts have to spend, i.e., not as much as they thought.

I believe it. The purchase of the Cubs was highly levered. When the top line doesn't come in as expected (and it hasn't) it really puts the squeeze on operations to stay compliant with bank covenants.

They're basically treading water until they can cash in on a big tv deal.

I wonder if the Diamondbacks ended up giving him the largest offer, if he would go there. All the talk about big markets and how his wife wants only LA or NY... Phoenix is the ultimate big city devoid of culture.

All the rumors I have seen say the DBacks were around 6/120 and NYY and Cubs were in neighborhood of 8/160...fuck that.

Yeah, if he wants to be the undisputed ace that may just leave the Cubs and Diamondbacks (out of those 5 teams). Unless we want to count the Yankees but it would be hard to compete with Sabathia for coverage...

Although being second to Kershaw or Sale ain't that bad of a gig if ya ask me... :dunno:

That's kind of silly, if true. Having Sale and Tanaka in the same rotation along with Danks, That's a pretty good 1-3.

    spiffie Got his zipper stuck

Might not be the worst thing to go somewhere that isn't an instant pressure situation, given that the most recent comparable pitchers to Tanaka (for cost/hype) took a year to really reach their potential.

    Matsuzaka:
    Year 1 - 108 ERA+
    Year 2 - 160 ERA+

    Darvish:
    Year 1 - 112 ERA+
    Year 2 - 145 ERA+

Matsuzaka's 2008 season is one of the biggest fools gold seasons in baseball history. Guy got away with a huge number of walks because he had a great BABIP and constantly got out of jams. Playing with a good lineup aided him to a 18-3 record. Not surprising he's been bad ever since.

He also got injured the next year so it's hard to tell what might have happened.

That said, wow, that BABIP is kind of insane. Esp. when the LD% was the same as the previous year and the GB/FB % was unchanged.

Soxtalk has a 2000+ post thread because every time some random reporter tweets something 50 different people repost the tweet and discuss it even though no actual info has come out in the last couple of days.

Also, why is this in the trolling for minors forum? Shouldn’t it be in the Take my Konerko forum?
