It shocks me that he wouldn't hold off on an opinion until November 11, 2012. Unless he is trying to make Romney say something.

"Some things are more important than football" is not exactly a revolutionary opinion, and it has the added advantage of being right.

I'm not disagreeing with what he said, I'm just saying all this bullshit you hear about Pennsylvania being a swing state. It just surprises me that you'd make a statement like that when it could affect you/

I don't know PA that well, but I'd like to think that most people there get it and the Paternotards are just a huge, loud minority.

    Don't be too sure.

But really...he's not saying what happened there is bad and that they had what was coming is because he wants some political points, he' saying it because it's objectively true.

A faction of Penn State trustees are appealing the NCAA sanctions, saying the consent decree is null and void because the head of the board did not have the proper authority to accept the sanctions unilaterally.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football...s-trustees-file-appeal-federal-lawsuit-denial

Also, there's some shit in there about the Freeh Report being dubious in nature and denying Penn State (and thus Paterno, I'm guessing) "due process". Can the NCAA just give the death penalty, please? Just say "no" to this appeal, then hit them with a 5-year death penalty for being salty about this.

I think that some (hopefully most) of the BOT "get it". They understand why these sanctions need to be punitive (the culture that gave Paterno the power to cover up child rape needs a re-set), and they also, hopefully, find the resistance to the sanctions and culture change sickening. However the hardcore anti-bash-Paterno and anti-sanctions guys (at least Lubrano and his little sect) I don't really think understand. Those guys seem cut from the same cloth as that jamoke that compared the day the sanctions were announced to how the rest of the country reacted to 9/11. There might be one or two that have the dollar signs in mind, but I still think the most vocal ones are really just hardcore JoePologists with nicely-pressed suits and swanky jobs.

What I don't get is there are what, like 30 trustees, and there are 4 joining this suit. So this clearly doesn't have the backing of the board, so in what capacity are they filing the appeal?

I honestly think these football-and-JoePa-uber-alles Board members who just got elected don't care too much about money, I think they're just clinically retarded like Franco Harris.

Gee, I never got my ballot for the Board vote this last spring. Glad to see paying at least twice as much as the beer-pong playing rioters up in Creepy Valley gets you a little consideration. :ridiculous:

They don't care about money, necessarily, but they care about Penn State's prestige and power and that and money go hand in hand.

They want money or the football equivalent of money. They know exactly why the sanctions are there unless they are delusional, and I doubt that they are. They just don't like consequences and want to pretend using rhetoric that they don't deserve them

If it's found that Sandusky helped run a pedophile ring, I wonder if that will add any to the PSU punishments. Sandusky acting alone is one thing but if it's like a ring of several sick fucking dudes just using Second Mile to run a pedophile ring then that's even more fucked up.

Would be some damn-fine icing on the cake if this went down (long shot that it probably is), though I am more than fine with those football cultists having to deal with a shitty football team for a decade or two.

Seems unfair to regular students to get f'd in the a just because athletics are a festering shithole.

Not saying this is the way it is, but I am willing to explore the idea that that kind of collateral damage is acceptable to deliver and punctuate the message that the culture of that entire area is in dire need of re-set and is not desirable in other schools. I see this whole thing as much more than a football or athletic problem, and the outcry from the vocal portions of the student body and BOT evidences that fact. That is, normally "excessive" punishments only work in this case if people (not just at Penn State) can see the connection between the extreme punitive measures and the culture that helped foster this incident; If that is not possible or improbable, then the collateral damage is decidedly not worth it.

Right--but the thing is, there are students who chose to go to Penn State for reasons having nothing to do with football who are gonna get hurt here. Taking away credentials is essentially saying their degree is meaningless. They paid anywhere between 40k and 120k to get a degree to try to live their life. Because the football team is a pit, that degree is worthless now? Sorry, that's just beyond the pale in terms of acceptable collateral damage to send a message about something they had nothing to do with.
