So umm, I know it's early in the rebuild. But should the Sox consider signing Jake Arrieta?

I think it sounds silly at first, but it could make sense.

    1) At this point, the Sox payroll is pegged to be extremely low in 2018. Decent chance it could be the lowest payroll in baseball. So even if they give him a nice contract, they will still have one of the lower payrolls in baseball.

    2) It brings some legitimacy to the rotation. And it also brings a potential mentor for guys like Giolito, Lopez, Kopech, Hansen, etc. I think it's dangerous to not have a proven SP for these young guys to interact with, learn from, etc.

    No, I didn't write this nonsense -

Nah. Mentor doesn't have to be a SP. Everybody respects the hell out of Coop. Also, they still have Shields.
    :shudder:

Obviously, they should sign Crash Davis.

Let's spend $100MM on a mentor who's on the decline and will be 34 in 2020.

Is that initial post copied and pasted from somewhere else?

And no, don't sign Arietta. I'm not sure he's even a mentor. He's certainly a risk to go back to what he was in mid-2016 and then they're stuck with him.

In addition to STILL wanting Magglio on the team in 2017, now he wants them to sign Arrieta during a rebuilding year

Yes. Getting an org's 8th best prospect for money they weren't going to be able to spend anyway is a great deal.

A Brazilian, and yet another 45 overall prospect added to the mix. From Pipeline:

What did the Sox have to offer Ohtani?

Is that $300k figure the minimum any team can offer him? I imagine the Sox will try for him with the pitch being we can't offer you shit but we'll be real good in 2-3 years and we've had Japanese players like Shingo and Iguchi. (and Fukudome :laff:)

Kind of dumb if you ask me. At least try and see if he will listen to an offer

Well, by no interest, I mean they know they have no shot and aren't going to waste their time with it.

And there is no minimum, the $300k is the max they can offer any 1 player under the penalty rules - which they are under for signing Robert.

Their 8th best prospect became the Sox 20th best prospect, but almost every system is shitty compared to the Sox. Even after graduating Moncada, Giolito, and Lopez, the Sox still have 6 of the top 90 prospects according to Pipeline (4, 9, 22, 39, 57 & 90). That includes the #1 pitching prospect and the #1 power hitter.

So with the Braves illegally signing some international free agents, it's expected a few of these signings will be considered void and they will become free agents. Not sure how the rules will work for this special case but I'd expect the Sox to be involved in some way.
