Guess we should start over at this point, with the PL beginning in 3 days.

But yeah good luck in building soccer in America without the help of billionaires. Building teams from the "ground up" won't get David Villa, Bastian Schweinsteiger or Jozy Altidore to come play in the league. Or lesser known but in their prime talented players like David Accam, Miguel Almiron or Diego Valeri. Nor will it make getting someone like Chicharito in the future possible. Without marquee players you have a league no one gives a shit about (it's hardly a league people give a shit about with the marquee names).

Yeah, English soccer grew out of local origins. Who gives a shit? The league is dominated by billionaire owners now. Some Chinese guy or an American in NYC doesn't give shit about Arsenal's grass roots origins. They care about Arsenal's wage bill and transfer spending and if Stan Kroenke is going to pony up the cash. A lot of them have actually had their grass roots identity taken away due to foreign billionaires coming in and meddling with tradition.

Hull City's Egyptian owners wanted to change their name officially to Hull City Tigers. Cardiff City's Malaysian owner Vincent Tan changed their traditional blue uniforms to red. Should MLS aspire to start "grass roots" football so that a Russian oligarch or Arab oil money can just buy them up when it's an en vogue thing to do? Half of the PL is owned by non British interests. The only thing English left about English football is the weather and crowd that comes to watch the games. Aside from 1 or 2 clubs, the entire PL ownership group is comprised of billionaires. That's the end result of modern football today. The PL is the largest playground for the rich- way more so than MLS. What does it matter if they were started 100 years ago as local clubs?

Anyway, there is no way the MLS can ever grow to the heights of the PL as it is currently structured. Not possible. It's way too risk-averse, and they are more concerned with stifling labor than they are creating a competitive product. It's a joke of a league because the "investment" is more important that pro/rel, which would actually force franchises to be good or get the fuck out.

But yeah, let's keep defending the honor of billionaires who want publicly financed stadiums. Let's keep rooting for a bullshit league that hasn't proven to be more popular than minor league baseball. Just keep doing what doesn't work.

I don't think anyone would compare MLS to the PL and it's not trying to be the PL nor do I think it has the goal of trying to be the PL even within the next 15 years.

MLS isn't perfect (or even good) by any means but under Don Garber's watch let went from having to contract teams and being in trouble with only 10 teams to now having 22 teams with 2 more set to come by 2019. Soccer specific stadiums didn't exist, and now there's 15 of them. What Garber and the MLS owners are doing is working. They are stifling labor, which yes in principle is shitty, but they are trying to prevent the financial ruin of the old NASL. It'd be nice if MLS didn't have a salary cap and could build super teams, but that'd come at the expense of American player development and also not be financially sustainable.

Without billionaires funding and pouring money into soccer and a domestic league, we likely don't have a Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, Tim Howard, Geoff Cameron, DeAndre Yedlin etc. or at least versions of these players that aren't good. They all got their start in MLS and a league where they got to play key minutes in their development. Finding the right European situation for these players would have been tough, it's safe to say some of these players would not have turned out as good.

If we had some "grass roots" domestic league that pays players less than they do now, most athletes wouldn't turn to soccer as a career. The fact that there is a league that exists that's willing to pay American internationals millions of dollars in their prime and more than they can make in Europe is important.

Soccer clubs (and all big time sports teams) all around the world are investments run by billionaires. Why should MLS be exempt from this? To make soccer in America some experiment of purity?

Also while MLS is not popular on a national scale, it's popular in terms of stadium attendance and a regional basis. Minor league baseball isn't drawing 40k like Atlanta and Seattle. Or selling out their 20-25k stadiums constantly like Portland, Toronto, Orlando, San Jose, KC.

No they need better coaching. Arena was a step up from Klinsmann but that was a low bar.

USA's roster is better than Costa Rica. To have a 6-0 net aggregate between a home and away in qualifying is embarrassing.
