I won't pretend to be an expert, I just remember hearing some scout or writer or someone talking about him and the Sox. Basically like "the Sox will likely be drafting high enough to do much better than Seth Beer"

Most of the hype was from after his FR year. Then his SO year happened and he's no big deal anymore.

That's the word on the street, but there is another college season for him. I trust Hahn to pick BPA even if it's a pitcher

    Ryan Cordell coming back.

Wow, nice return, assuming his back issues aren't serious.

    Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

Cordell was a two-way player as a Liberty freshman before becoming a full-time hitter and leading the Flames to their first NCAA regional final in 2013, the same year he signed with the Rangers for $100,000 as an 11th-round Draft pick. He totaled 31 homers and 41 steals in his first two full pro seasons but struggled in 2015 in his first taste of Double-A. He fared better last season in his return to that level, posting an .803 OPS with a career-high 19 homers, only to be traded to the Brewers in early September as the PTBNL in the Trade Deadline deal that had sent Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress to Texas.

Cordell has long stood out for his athleticism and tools, four of which have the potential to grade as at least average. He has the bat speed and strength to hit for power from the right side, and he's shown the feel for hitting and sound approach to produce solid batting averages. Cordell struggles to control the strike zone and has swing-and-miss tendencies, though he's also shown an ability to make adjustments throughout his career. Cordell has plus speed that makes him a threat on the basepaths, and he's efficient when he chooses to run.

Cordell played six positions in the Rangers' system including third base and shortstop, but the Brewers plan to deploy him in the outfield exclusively moving forward. Though he's a rangy defender in center field, Cordell likely will see time at all three outfield spots given Milwaukee's surplus of toolsy center fielders. His athleticism and power-speed combo make him an ideal fourth outfielder in the big leagues.

Also, look how Hahn strikes when the fire is hot. I hate KW more and more thinking about what he could've pulled at the deadline last year.

How the Brewers didn't want to package in Miguel Gonzalez as well (who just gave up 2 runs in 13+ innings against the Dodgers and Cubs) is beyond me. Hahn would probably take another fringy prospect for him too.

  16. maurice

    maurice Gangster of Love

Sure, but he doesn't have to. Two 50-grade prospects probably is a better return than whatever was offered for both of them packaged together.

Besides, even after this trade, Hahn can still package some combo of Gonzalez / Melky / Jennings.

Hahn has a good collection of athletic OFs that could become a Rowand type but at the least should be serviceable 4th OFs. Cordell, Tilson if he ever stays healthy, Engel and L Garcia.

And pretty much all of them will get a chance to play, especially if they move Melky soon.

So after drafting an elite college hitter that looked like a great pick at the time, the Sox took 5 toolsy athletic blacks with their first pick in 7 drafts. TBF, Walker and Barnum are hardly true first round picks since the Sox had to give away their actual first round pick due to compensation rules. But only Anderson has a real shot of actually being anything. And that happened when Hahn took over too.

Best case scenario for the last 5 are: ace, elite reliever or 3rd starter, good 2 way catcher with a chance at elite bat, elite reliever and everyday 3B in the mold of Troy Glaus.

Great trade to flip a lefty bullpen specialist for a former first round pick/top 100 prospect. Yes Gillaspie has struggled this year, but a good idea to buy low on this guy.

I don't have any data to proof it, but I don't think it's that uncommon for a reliever to spend 4-5+ years in the minors getting their shit figured out. Of course, a lot of them fizzle out and never reach The Show.

Goldberg will be a similar situation if he sticks.
